Wairangi Cottage is situated
in one of the most remote and beautiful parts of the Wairarapa. We hope you
have a wonderful visit. Wild deer, angora goats, black pigs, rabbits,
possums, sheep and cattle roam on the station.
Your hosts
are Albert Wheatley and Tania Osborne (tel 06 307 8847) at the Wairangi homestead. Please don’t hesitate to ask
Tania or Albert for
information. They will help if he can.
If going on
an extended walk on the farm, please check with Tania or Albert about lambing, wild
cattle, bulls etc. Please let them know your intentions and when you
return, for your own safety. There are Intentions Forms in the kitchen
(sorry they’re Canadian but they are thorough)
Suggested Activities
-
Sleep, dream, read and relax at the cottage by the fire or on the
verandahs.
-
Wonderful exploring on foot
or mountain bike. For the very fit, a 13 kilometre round track rises
and falls steeply round the farm. Normally it is approx 3 hours biking (expert) or 6 hours tramping. Worth it. Alternatively bike
out to the Cape River Road turn off. Spot the wild Kaimanawa horses
out in the open.
-
Fill the Kiwitub from
the roof water tank. Light the nearby firebox and heat up the water.
It's just a tub so no thermostat or chemicals...just pure water. Empty
it down the hill with the other hose.
-
Our small waterfall is worth finding.
Four-wheel drive up the track by the main river (floods permitting: check
with Tania about driving conditions at your own risk) about 10 minutes or
walk for 20 mins up the same track. There is a small swimming/dipping
hole in the river.
-
An alternative good walk (1/2 hour) is up the main river and turn
right at the first tributary and follow that river up to an old hut where
one of the previous owners lived. Lots of wild goats in here.
-
We will organise hunting or sea fishing for an extra cost.
-
White Rock beach and lagoon are beautiful. Superb expert surfing.
Ask locals where to swim. Not at main beach.
Other
nearby activities include golf, wineries, coastal fishing, clay bird
shooting (will come to Wairangi if you wish), and horse treks. Check with
the Martinborough
Visitor Centre.
