Pig Hunting on Wairangi Station

Bringing back a pig Hunting on Wairangi

Wairangi Station is famous for the game animals which roam freely over most of its hills and river valleys.  Deer and goat hunting are reserved but guided pig hunting is available (at an extra cost) for guests staying at Wairangi Cottage.  Clay bird shooting can be arranged.

Guided pig hunting,  This is run by Dan Te Tau and his brothers.  See Dan's website at Pig Hunting Adventures Wairarapa

Dan and Tony Te Tau (who lives at Wairangi now) are very experienced and keen pig hunters with at least 30 years of experience.  Their family comes from the Wairarapa.  Dan or Tony and their dogs will guide you  for what could be one of the most exciting hunts of your life over Wairangi's rugged countryside. They both know Wairangi well, and its game.  Pigs are not guaranteed but they will do their best and you'll have the day of your life.  Cost:  $150 per person per day.  Maximum 3 persons per guide.

Start:  First light (5am) from Wairangi Cottage. Hunting  time adjusted for clients' fitness and experience.   Guests must be staying at Wairangi Cottage and usually need to book hunting in advance.

Guided spotlighting and possum shooting:  Usually at night and fun for novice shooters.  Must be guided unless the shooter has a firearms licence and can satisfy the Farm Manager of his experience and safety knowledge. Cost:  $30 per hour for guide. Minimum two hours. Possums have been subject to a 1080 drop so aren't as plentiful at present.  There are rabbits and hares to shoot.

Clay bird shooting:  A licensed independent mobile clay bird shooting business will come to Wairangi and set up for guests in one of the valleys.  Try your skills with a shotgun on bright orange clay discs.  Enjoyable for everyone.
