"One of the most beautiful backcountry farming stations in the Wairarapa"

Cheerful and comfortable,  Wairangi Cottage is nestled in a field of wild mint and chamomile on the rugged 5000 acre Wairangi Station, between Martinborough and the White Rock coast in the south eastern Wairarapa.  The cottage, which overlooks the Cape River,  is a delightful, self-contained farmstay in the middle of some of the most remote and spectacular farming country in the lower North Island.   See location

Wairangi Cottage sleeps 8-12 in three bedrooms and has deep verandahs, polished wooden floors, two bathrooms, sitting room, a fully equipped farm kitchen, dishwasher, logfire and large gas BBQ.  Bed linen and towels are supplied.  See photos   Soak in the brand new Kiwitub in the paddock overlooking the river.

Wairangi Station is the true New Zealand backcountry experience.  Famous throughout the lower North Island for its deer and pig hunting on steep bush-clad hills, in river valleys and through ever-changing vegetation, it is a marvellous place to walk or mountain-bike and explore.  The wild  White Rock coast offers surfing, swimming and boating.

Deer hunting is reserved, but pig hunting, possum shooting and clay bird shooting are available (at extra cost) for guests staying at the cottage.  Experienced hunters and experts will guide you over the Wairangi hills.  See hunting.

"True New Zealand.  We loved the country.  Hope to come again."  Coakley family, Wellington (they have come again)

"We agree with EVERYTHING noted by other visitors, but were particularly entranced by the linen cupboard.  The high quality contents were freshly washed and beautifully folded in a way that was emblematic of the exquisite care and thoughtfulness so apparent in every aspect of this delightful place in its magical setting."  Gilbert, Kamala, Michele and Sher, Wellington.

"Unbelievable scenery.  Thanks for the trip to the top of the world."  Johnny and Maggie Troughton, Cheltenham, England.

"Great walks and a very relaxing time in general.  Marvellous."  Lee family, Wellington.

"Many thanks for your hospitality.  A never ending driveway.  Lovely cottage.  All mod cons."  Smith family, Gloucester, UK.

Surfing Report from www.surf.co.nz

"Surfing at White Rock is some of the best in the country, but the areas that are surfed are not part of the main beach. Dolphin Bay is located at the northern end and involves a 10 - 15 minute walk over rough terrain. There are both left and right beach and reef breaks at Dolphin Bay, and also a seal colony, who sometimes don't like sharing the waves.

White Rock Beach is 5 kilometres long with a large White Rock located around the 2.5 kilometre mark, (hence the name White Rock). White Rock Beach is very exposed to the elements getting hit by large swells and some of the strongest winds in the country. There is a moderate to steep swash gradient which produces a heavy beach dump and only in larger swells do wave actually break off the beach. The beach is made up of dark sand and gravel. White Rock is situated 60 kilometres south of Martinborough. There is no formal car parking but it's not difficult to park. "
